Halcyon Days created this appealing little musical box to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Edvard Grieg, the Norwegian composer. Grieg wrote the music that accompanied Ibsen’s play, Peer Gynt, based on a folktale about a man’s downfall and redemption. The box depicts a scene from the play, surrounded by traditional Norwegian decorations, and there are paintings of Peer’s journeys around the base. When opened, the mechanical musical box plays an excerpt from “Morning Mood” from Grieg’s score.
Made in Bilston, once the heart of Britain’s enamelling industry, the musical box uses the traditional technique of enamel on copper.
