In 2022, the five-year endeavour to complete the Elizabeth Tower restoration project finally finished, and people across the country were very happy to see the infamous landmark emerge again from the scaffolding it’d been wrapped up in for so long.
It’s the most ambitious restoration ever undertaken in the history of the tower, involving extensive repair work to both the inside and outside of the tower. All 3,343 pieces of the cast-iron roof were removed, refurbished and reassembled. Stonework repairs were carried out in numerous places to mend bomb damage and weathering. 1,296 pieces of new, mouth-blown glass were created to replace the clock face, matching the original colour perfectly, and all of the gilding was redone too, using 181,250 sheets of gold leaf. The scale of the Big Ben restoration was extensive, but it has put the tower in excellent condition and ensured its function for the future.
Commemorative Jewellery To Mark The Elizabeth Tower Restoration
In celebration of the long-awaited end of the Elizabeth Tower restoration project, our heritage brand, Mallards Collection, was commissioned to create some exceptional jewellery pieces to mark the occasion. First, we were commissioned to create two limited edition pocket watches, one of which used the clock dial motif accurately recreated from the tower’s own design on the outside. These golden timepieces were intricately detailed, requiring immense care and precision, and they ended up remarkable examples of the bespoke work we do.
We were also commissioned to create another limited edition piece, this time a gold and silver locket that also bears an engraving of the clock dial from the tower, capturing the iconic design in beautifully intricate detail. You can find these for sale at the online Parliament shop.
Commemorative pieces like these are always an honour to receive commissions for. Expressing our love for our heritage and history through the medium of jewellery allows us the chance to create truly unique pieces with real significance.
