Woodford watch from Bonds the Jewellers stars in new Disney Alice film

The White Rabbit’s pocket watch in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland stories has to be one of the most iconic watches in literature. So, we were all delighted at Bonds the Jewellers when the props team from the new Disney film adaptation, Alice Through the Looking Glass, approached us to provide them with a pocket watch. Disney’s sequel to their 2010 hit, Alice in Wonderland, sees Alice (Mia Wasikowska) having to defeat Time (played by Sacha Baron Cohen as half man, half clock) to save her friend the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). As time has such a big part to play in this film, naturally there is a great focus on watches and clocks – and that’s where we at Bonds the Jewellers came in… Which watch did Disney choose? The starring role of the Pocket Watch is played by a Woodford sterling silver full hunter pocket watch. It was selected about three years ago, and we were very pleased to be involved. The Woodford pocket watch is safely housed in a polished sterling silver full hunter case. The dial is a classic white with elegant black Roman numerals, with a seconds sub dial at the six o’clock position. It’s a very simple, very elegant watch, perfect for showing up clearly on film. Inside, there’s a Swiss 17 jewelled mechanism (not essential in a prop, but excellent for those of us who, like the White Rabbit, don’t like being late!). Watch and clock makers Woodford started out in Birmingham’s famous jewellery quarter in 1860. As this is the same decade that the first Alice novel was published, Woodford feels like a very appropriate watchmaker for this film! Woodford’s watches are inspired by traditional and historical pocket watches, so work wonderfully well with the film’s Victorian costumes. Woodford pocket watches at Bonds the Jewellers If you’d like to capture some of the quirky, Victorian elegance of Lewis Carroll’s world, this beautiful watch is a great place to start. We also have a similar Woodford full hunter pocket watch with a gold plate finish. If you prefer a half hunter, this Woodford sterling silver watch is a stunning alternative to Disney’s choice.
