Halcyon Days William Tell Musical Enamel Box

This charming enamel box was produced to mark the 700th anniversary of William Tell’s legendary arrow shot. According to legend, in 1307 Swiss marksman William Tell shot an apple from his son’s head, under the orders of the Austrian Governor. As Tell was an expert bowman, the story ended well. The legend was made into an opera by Rossini, best known for its “William Tell Overture”. The box depicts scenes from the opera, and when you open the lid, a miniature mechanism plays the famous overture. Crafted in Bilston, once the heart of Britain’s enamelling industry, the box uses the traditional technique of enamel on copper.
