A commemorative VE Day enamel box from Halcyon Days

Halcyon Days crafted a beautiful enamel box to mark the 60th anniversary of VE Day; and we have a limited stock of this exquisite box available. Let’s lift the lid on this lovely little commemorative piece… The VE Day enamel box The VE Day limited edition enamel box celebrates that momentous day, 8 May 1945, when the German forces surrendered to the Allies – and marked the end of World War II in Europe. Halcyon Days designed the box to celebrate the 60th anniversary of VE Day, using evocative events and symbols. St Paul’s Cathedral in London, which became an icon of Britain’s resistance and defiance during the Blitz, takes pride of place on the lid as the RAF fly overhead. Around the base, crowds wave Union Flags outside Buckingham Palace, as a victory formation flies overhead, and a newspaper headline proclaims “V-E DAY!” Inside the box is a brief account of the anniversary. Crafted by Halcyon Days Halcyon Days produce beautiful, hand-finished enamel boxes. The company was founded in London’s Mayfair in 1950, starting out as an antique shop before leading a revival in enamelled copper boxes in the early 1970s. Halcyon Days received its first Royal Warrant in 1972 (Royal Warrants of Appointment are granted to companies that have supplied goods or services to the Royal Households for at least five years). Their first commission was for the late Queen Mother in 1970, and they continue to carry out bespoke pieces for clients. They also produce items to commemorate significant events – such as their beautifully-detailed commemorative box for VE Day. The beautiful effect of enamel One of the most notable things about the box is its vivid colours, which is typical of enamelled pieces. Enamelling is fusing powered glass to a metal surface using heat. Smooth and colour-fast, it’s the perfect surface for designs such as this one. Halcyon Days use copper for their exquisite little boxes, and hand paint the designs onto the enamel. They use techniques that have been handed down for generations – although the process has probably changed in some ways since the ancient Egyptians enamelled their jewellery! A perfect memento The VE Day box is a touching commemorative gift for those who experienced VE Day, or perhaps have family who were involved.
