
Halcyon Days William Tell Enamel Musical Box produced to mark the 700th Anniversary of the legendary Swiss hero William Tell shooting the apple from his sons head. Around the Base of the Box are painted scenes from the opera William Tell and on the Lid inside a Gold Plated Mount is painted William Tell about to Shoot the Apple from his sons head.
In 1307 according to tradition William Tell an expert marksman with the crossbow shot an apple balanced on his sons head at the insistence of the Austrian Governor Hermann Gessler. William Tell had long been a symbol of Swiss independence when Friedrich von Schiller retold the story in his 1804 play Wilhelm Tell. This in turn became the basis for Gioacchino Rossinis opera Guillaume Tell first performed in Paris in 1829
When the Lid of the Box is opened it plays the Overture from the William Tell opera.
