
To commemorate the tercentenary of the birth in 1706 of one of the founding fathers of the United States of America who helped frame the Declaration of Independence. Benjamin Franklin was not only a great statesman and diplomat, but also a publisher, author, scientist, inventor and philanthropist. Born in Boston, the son of an English immigrant, he later moved to Philadelphia, where he established his successful printing business. Throughout his life he believed passionately in self-improvement and public service. The striking image portrayed on this box is inspired by the statue of him by James Earle Fraser in the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial in Philadelphia.
